A quick question for people who read fanfics for US films/tv shows

Does it bother you when a fanfic writer doesn't use US spellings? Because as someone from the UK it is much easier for me to write with British spellings. I'm already concentrating on trying to use the right terminology that I think worrying about using US spelling would just not make writing fun.

And I'm not talking about authors using the wrong terminology or cultural traditions or slang because i can understand being a bit put off by that, I'm talking about them using "colour" instead of "color" or "realise" instead of "realize" for example

(The only exception for this is that I will use "mom" instead of "mum")

Google docs is like: hey hey, this here is british spelling, but earlier you wrote something else in USonian spelling, do you want to correct it to USonian spelling to make it consistent?

Me: no thanks, i will leave the spelling as i wrote it

Google docs: do you want to change the document to british english then?

Me: no thanks

Google docs: why???

I keep seeing people from like. the South of the US making fun of British summer and saying we're weak and don't know real heat. and I keep defending brits bc like there is no AC, buildings are built to amplify and insulate heat, and its an island so its humid as hell. its truly miserable. but I'm starting to want to visit somewhere hot in the US during summer so I can get an actual comparison, bc what the hell it can't be That much worse

Interacting with USian Doctor Who fans, and speaking to USian friends of mine, I've noticed something that really amuses me!

The US has no concept of 'Family Show' on the whole.

So this post (& the questions to my friends) was caused by a DW post that called DW 'A Children's Show' which... It isn't.

It's a Family Show.

The easiest way to explain it is with the old spinoffs, the Sarah Jane Adventures and Torchwood.

TSJA was a children's show. It was designed and written in such a way that children could watch it alone, with no supervision and while adults might derive some enjoyment from it (because it was well written!) it was aimed, written and produced with children in mind.

Torchwood was an adult show. It was designed and written in such a way that directly excluded children, from violence to horror to sexual aspects, it was not, in any way, intended to be watched by children.

Doctor Who is the middle ground. It's a Family Show. It's designed for children AND adults to watch together. The horror isn't so scary that children would be traumatised (I'm talking the average child. I don't doubt there are episodes that scare children but none to the point of trauma), but the plots are a little more complex and there's plenty in there that's more adult oriented.

Doctor Who is aired prime time on BBC. It's a family evening show, everyone sit down together and watch the silly space man together and then the kids go to bed and adults watch more grown up stuff.

It's written, produced and aired in such a way to include everyone! The jokes and things aimed at children might not appeal to the adults but the rest of the show does! The plots may sometimes fly over children's heads, but there's adults watching with them that can explain (IN THEORY! yes, I know that's not everyone's experience)

I also think this is where a lot of USian criticism of the show comes from.

Some think DW is a children's show, so are surprised by the deeper sides of things because, well, it's for children!

And some think DW is an adult show, so think the things designed to appeal to a younger audience are bad, are cheesy, are out of place.

Please note that this isn't a criticism of USian fans! I love y'all and your inclusion in the fandom!

This is something I have noticed as a Brit that has amused me and I wanted to explain!

i love when something created with no money gets popular and famous and a bunch of follow-ups are made with a huge budget but they still have to refer back to the terrible, no-money visuals from the original thing. like og dr who was like “ok whats a monster umm ok we’ll put a plunger and a whisk on it” and they had to keep doing that same shit for all the 300 years that shows been on. the saw bathroom is 30 ft across and has multiple sinks and multiple toilets but no stalls and a BATHTUB. what public bathroom looks like that?? none of them. nobody questioned it at any point and guess what they had to recreate that dumbass fucking set like 3 times. star trek has all the money they could ever want but vulcans are still always gonna be just regular guys with elf ears and eyeshadow. it’s the best. every franchise needs this to be kept humble
